Thanksgiving: A Biblical Relationship Beyond the Holiday
By Charles Barksdale, M.A
Introduction:
Thanksgiving is more than just a holiday; it is a time for us to reflect on the biblical relationship we have with God. As we gather with loved ones, we may also experience feelings of loneliness, missing family, and challenges to our mental health. In this devotional read, we will explore how we can find hope and strength in Jesus as our Lord and Savior during this Thanksgiving season.
Gratitude in the Bible:
The Bible is filled with passages that encourage us to be thankful in all circumstances. One such verse is found in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, which says, "Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." This verse reminds us that gratitude is not dependent on our external circumstances but is a choice we can make in every situation.
Dealing with Loneliness:
During the holidays, it is common to experience feelings of loneliness, especially if we are unable to be with our loved ones. The Bible offers comfort and encouragement in Psalm 147:3, which says, "He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds." In times of loneliness, we can find solace in knowing that God is near to the brokenhearted and will provide healing and comfort.
Missing Family:
When we are separated from our family during Thanksgiving, it can be challenging. However, we can find strength and hope in the promise of God's presence. In Joshua 1:9, we read, "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." This verse reminds us that even when we are physically apart from our loved ones, we are never alone because God is always with us.
Mental Health and Finding Hope:
The holiday season can be emotionally challenging for many, affecting our mental health. But in Isaiah 41:10, God assures us, saying, "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." This verse reminds us that God is our source of strength and can help us navigate through difficult emotions, providing hope and healing.
Jesus as Lord and Savior:
Ultimately, Thanksgiving should remind us of the greatest gift we have received - Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. In John 3:16, we are reminded of God's immense love for us, "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." As we gather with gratitude, let us remember the sacrifice of Jesus and the hope we have in Him.
Conclusion:
Thanksgiving is a time when we can deepen our biblical relationship with God. Even when faced with feelings of loneliness, missing family, and challenges to our mental health, we can find hope and strength in Jesus as our Lord and Savior. Let us remember to give thanks in all circumstances, knowing that God is always with us, healing our broken hearts, and providing comfort. May this Thanksgiving be a time of true devotion and gratitude as we reflect on the blessings we have received through our relationship with Jesus Christ.
